Sony is shutting down PlayStation Mobile in July2015

Sony's PlayStation Mobile is going the way of the dodo. The company announced Wednesday that it will stop publishing content for the platform on July 15.

According to a message posted to the PlayStation support forums, purchased content will be accessible to users through the site through Sept. 10, 2015.

The site will be closed after Sept. 10, but Sony will allow users to access content they've previously purchased — but only if they go through an activation process described here.

Launched in 2012, PlayStation Mobile is Sony's store that initially offered games for both the PS Vita handheld device as well as Android phones. The platform never really took off: Support for Android devices was dropped in August 2014, and now the entire service is coming to an end.

The news comes days after Sony announced it would cut 1,000 jobs at its mobile phone unit in Lund, Sweden. The move is part of a cut announced in February, when Sony said it would lay off 2,100 employees in its struggling mobile division.
